How YOU can be a part of MSC
After-School Program
Once a week, teams of MSC mentors visit our partnering elementary schools to facilitate an
after-school program for our new fifth-grade girls. Sessions include: presentations by highly successful business women, health professionals and college professors; a wide array of artistic, musical and creative writing activities; conflict resolution and methodologies; and, in-depth discussions about topics relevant to growing personal and academically.
One-on-One Mentoring
As the girls approach the sixth grade, each is paired with a one-on-one mentor who commits to a
minimum of three years. These mentors remain a consistent presence in an otherwise changing, sometimes unstable, environment. As the girls enter high school, almost all participants recommit to the program for the high school years. The mentors’ consistency and long-term commitment are crucial. Whether going to the museum or just hanging out, it takes time to build authentic, trusting relationships that will help these young girls to navigate the many choices they face.
"Behind the Scenes"
Throughout the year, we respond to requests for support of all kinds. With over 75 girls in 40 schools, one of our greatest needs is coordinating transportation. Someone needs a ride to camp. Twenty girls need to be chauffeured to Center Stage. Beyond transportation, volunteers offer homes for meeting with college recruiters, hosting swim parties and offering mentor training. In all of these ways and countless more, literally hundreds of volunteers contribute their time, talent and financial resources to make MSC a model of success.
