Our comprehensive program model powerfully combines dedicated, long-term mentoring with exceptional programming and resources.
Our program is intentionally designed to welcome girls into the circle in the fifth grade. From September through May, volunteer leaders facilitate an after-school program at one of our partnering elementary schools in east Baltimore.
Once a student graduates from the fifth grade, she is matched with her own mentor the summer prior to sixth grade. Mentors commit to serving as a consistent presence in a young girl’s life throughout the middle and high school years.
More Than MentoringMy Sister’s Circle doesn’t stop at mentoring. We create additional opportunities for growth, exposure and ultimately change.
Throughout the year, we introduce local cultural, skill-based, educational, recreational, and community offerings and brings together mentors and mentees in a group setting creating and environment of camaraderie and support.
MSC guides girls through the public and/or private school selection process to ensure that each participant is in the optimal educational setting given her circumstances and needs. Support includes home visits by staff and mentors to encourage family participation in the school selection process as well as access to extensive, established relationships with local schools
Positive, structured summer activities are highly encouraged by MSC. We have partnerships with, and scholarships to many quality summer programs, and can help identify and select appropriate choices.
MSC connects students to career-focused workshops and fellowships, such as the Institute for Public Policy fellowship and the Urban Journalism program, which can guide a young girl’s future. MSC also arranges shadow days and internships with professionals in the community, refers students to job placement programs and hosts various career panels.
Based on individual interests, MSC connects students with leadership opportunities and programs, such as the GBA Leadership Institute and the Rotary Youth Leadership Association.
One of our greatest assets, our own Director of College Counseling, provides individualized, professional guidance for those preparing for and attending college.
